Hong Kong-based designers are reimagining Hong Kong's historic tram and the ever-popular ferries to see what public transit could look like in a world after the Covid-19 pandemic.
Hong Kong Tramways The tramway line was opened in 1904 and operates only on the northern side of Hong Kong Island. It is one of the oldest modes of public transport in Hong Kong. Since April 2010, Hong Kong Tramways Limited (HKT) is wholly owned by Veolia Transport China Limited (VTCL).

Tram services—alongside those of other forms of transportation—were suspended on several occasions even after the Japanese military took control of the city, and could resume only with limitations. As mentioned earlier, trams in Hong Kong are open to the elements. Interiors are narrow, equipped with wooden benches. All trams use a double-deck configuration; for the best views, climb to the second level and secure a seat next to a window. The tram’s slow (if somewhat herky-jerky) motion gives you plenty of time to gawp at the views.

Today, Hong Kong Tramways operates a fleet of 164 tramcars – making it the world’s largest double-deck tram fleet still in operation. The trams carry some 200,000 passengers daily between the east and west along the north coast of Hong Kong Island on a total of 30km (19 mi) of track. Wong points out the No. 120 tram with excitement when it passes by. “That is the only one of its kind circulating in Hong Kong!” he exclaims.
