Marvell, the metaphysical poet, who carried the school of Dome to its zenith, uses all the ingenuous resources to present the carpediem theme of the conquest of time through intense enjoyment. Marvell’s To His Coy Mistress is one of the most eloquent. Although Marvell rides on the theme of the love and time, Marvell is unique in his use of wit and logic, on the one hand and intense emotion Andrew Marvell an English metaphysical poet, Parliamentarian, and the son of a Church of England clergyman (also named Andrew Marvell). Jonathan Bate writes in the introduction to the Penguin Classics edition of Andrew Marvell: The Complete Poems that his “small body of highly wrought work constitutes English poetry’s most concentrated imaginative investigation of the conflicting demands of the active and the contemplative life, the self and society, the force of desire and the pressure of morality, the detached mind and the body embedded in its environment.” Perhaps Marvell deserves a little bit of rose or rue or laurel. Marvell (1621-78), who will be celebrating his 400 th birthday on 31 March 2021, was born at Winestead-in-Holderness and moved to the Hull Charterhouse in 1624.
