Incoterms (International Commercial Terms) are a set of rules that help simplify the definition of rights and obligations in international commerce. There are a total of eleven Incoterms, but only seven apply to air transport. By offering Door-To-Door Express service, DHL Express operates with only three Incoterms.
Incoterms® 2010 rules came into force on Januray 1, 2011. The delivery terms DAF, DES, DEQ and DDU have been replaced by new delivery terms DAP and DAT. Incoterms® are the rules frequently used worldwide in international and domestic contracts, illustrating responsibilities between buyer and seller for costs and risk, as well as Shipment Value Protection.

DPU is the only Incoterms rule that requires the seller to unload goods at destination. The seller should therefore ensure that it is in a position to organise unloading at the named place. Should the parties intend the seller not to bear the risk and cost of unloading, the DPU rule should be avoided and DAP should be used instead. For example, DAP stands for “Delivered At Place”, which indicates the seller covers the costs and risk of transporting goods as well as unloading these goods at an agreed destination. This clarity reduces the risk of miscommunication over who is responsible for the risk and transport of purchased goods during international trade, which can result in unnecessary delays in shipping. In DAP, Delivery at Place, the sellers is responsible for moving the goods from origin until their delivery at the disposal place agreed with the buyer ready for unloading at destination. The seller bears the risk until delivery of goods to the named place and should get a contract of carriage that matches the contract of sale until the agreed delivery point.
